Nation - Pratchett Terry

The book centers around a boy named Mau who is just passed through his manhood ceremony when a tidal wave destroyed his entire village. The tsunami changed everything. Now Mau is alone on the island, there's a lot of things he has to face. But along came other people. And together they make their own Nation.

The Nation tells a story of disaster, pain, fear, challenges, hope, the unknown...It seems like America where lots of people from different regions come together and help each other and get along. The Nation is a fascinating and fantastic book to read.

The Client-John Grisham

This book is a mystery/thriller and is very good. An 11 year old boy, Mark Sway, and his younger brother, Rick, were smoking, it's America, when a lawyer in a shiny lincoln, thats a car, pulls up. The man commits suicide with a bullet in his head. Rick witnesses this but was in denial and went into a state of shock. He stopped talking, he stopped eating and he stopped doing anything. The next witness is Mark and he gets taken into countless questionings and interrogations and soon finds out he had enough. He finds a kind lawyer called Reggie Love who wants to help him, even for free. She helps him out of every loophole and manages to protect him from the US attorneys and the mafia. READ ON TO FIND OUT!!!

The street Lawyer- John Grisham

This book is a crime/fiction book and it is very good. Michael Brock is a lawyer who is trying to earn as much money as he can. One day a homeless man takes 9 lawyers hostage including Michael. The SWAT team, this is America, rescues them resulting in the hobo's death-he was sniped in the head. Shocked, Michael suddenly wishes to help the homeless and to save them from poverty. He goes against everything he once thought to sue the people that made these poor souls homeless. He then loses his job, wife and his life. (Maybe this is a lesson?) Anyway the book is really good. GET IT NOW!!!

At the Sign of the Sugared Plum

by Mary Hooper

At the Sign of the Sugared Plum is one of those book that speak in old English. It's kinda hard to understand everything because the author does use the word sweetmeat and confectionery instead of candy. However, after a few chapters, you'll get the hang of it.

The book is about a girl called Hannah who lived during the time of the plague. The ending of the book is a little 'huh' and 'wtf? that's it?' but I think that there is a sequel to it.

It's worth a read if you're bored and wants to read something else rather than a chick flick novel.

Double Fudge by Judy Blume

Peter is twelve years old and he has a little brother - Farley Drexel Hatcher, which is Fudge for short. Fudge is very obsession about money, as he composes songs about money, draws pictures of money, etc. Because of this, their grandma suggests they should go to the U.S Mint; however, the situation gets worse. Peter also has a little sister, called Tootsie and she's only nearly one year old. Peter has a dog called Turtle because he used to have a small turtle, but his brother - Fudge - swallowed it. Fudge has a mania, called Uncle Feather, and it can repeat what people say.
One day, their family meet his dad, Warren Hatcher, 's long-lost cousin's family, Howie Hatcher and his wife Eudora from Hawaii and they have twin daughters, Flora and Fauna, and a son, who also called Farley Drexel Hatcher. Therefore, Warren's family called him Mini Farley. However, the Howies make too many terribel trouble, that Peter and Fudge get very annoyed.
Let's read and find out what are the trouble are, and how Peter and Fudge can handle them. I think this book is a funny book, which everyone should read!!!

Eragon

Eragon, the main character finds a big blue stone with unusual patterns on it. He live in the county side of a world called Alageasia. Eragons world is controlled by an evil man named, Galbatorix, a former dragon rider. Dragon riders are described as the peace keepers in the world. The drangon riders were thought to be extinct when Galbatorix lost his dragon and decided to kill his fellow riders.
The blue egg suddenly hatches and out pops a little blue dragon. Erangon, not wanting anyone to find out about his dragon, decided to train the dragon, which he named Saphira. After a dangerous encounter with the enemy, Brom soon dies. Soon Eragon gets captured and taken to the princess that he has been lately dreaming about. During their escape, Eragon is forced to fight a shade, he thinks this is Galbatorix's black magic. The only way to defeat the army, is to go to the varden, a big village against Galbatorix. He soon joins the Vurden and they go to war. Eragon defeats Galbatorix and leaves to go study with the elves.
Very good and exciting book

New moon- Stephenie Meyer

New moon is the 2nd book in the series and is not recommended for very sesitive people. In New Moon, the Cullens celebrate Bella's 18th birthday by a party, obviously. She accidently cut herself, yes she's that prone to damage, and blood dropped on the carpet. Jasper nearly kills Bella and the whole family is shocked. Face

by Benjamin Zephaniah.

This book is about a phrase that a boy called Martin goes through after he was involved in an accident that basically turn his life around. He used to be in a gang, dating the perfect girlfriend. However, after the accident, his face was burnt and even though it healed, many people does not treat him like they had before.

It's a really interesting book and I think that many people would enjoy it for a quick read when they are bored. It's also worth reading because it has bits of comic and bits of action in it.

Twilight

by Stephanie Meyer.

Well, since now I have come to read it, I decided to blog about it. It's not a bad book, but it's not THAT great either.

It's just basically about Bella who's in love with Edward who is a vampire whose family consists of vampires and they go on a journey with each other. It's the typical story line and I guess that everyone had either read the book or seen the movie.

Just a side note: After 400 pages of vampires, I had came to think that I can see every single tiny detail of Edward, however, I can't visualise what Bella look like. It's probably because Stephanie Meyer wants every single girl to be able to slip into Bella's role?

Kurt Cobain Journals

This is a book that is actually a journal by Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana. (who wrote smell like teen spirit...)

This book is strangely twisted and it's full of random thoughts that have been crammed and held on to for too long. It's a photocopy of letters, diary entries and drafts.

It is very interesting if you are interested in reading a journal of a dead rockstar. However, the book is parental advisory. However, it is a truly interesting account HAND written by Kurt Cobain. It's worth a read.

Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods

Bill Bryson is one of my favorite authors and there are many reasons why!
First of all, all of his books are hilarious! They appeal to all audiences, whether young or old, Bill Bryson knows how to make you laugh, whilst at the same time provides some very interesting insights, which is rare in books but is a much sought for attribute that all authors strive to achieve.

In this book, Bryson travels across the Appalachian trail across the heart of the US, facing many hazards on the way, from Blizzards, to Bears to old ladies with heavy handbags, he's dealt with it all... He crosses rivers, mountains, forests and highways wrought with rude teenage drivers from neighboring towns and angry taxi drivers with dented cabs. As I said, he's dealt with it all... He explains his discussions with passers-by about fears for the occasional chuckling murderer lurking in the forest, and about his debates with plump stalkers who follow him through the trail about the governments decision to outlaw chewing bubblegum whilst handling a gun and the park ranger's awesome 1840's outfit.

When you've got friends who's favorite pastime is discussing the relative merits of the external-frame backpack, who needs enemies?

This is a great book about a boy named Nick who was sent to his father in Africa while where he lived was being bombarded. Then the Japanese invaded where his father lived. Nick got separated from his dad and he tried to escape. And you will have to read to find out more.
The book at first may not appeal you much, but don't judge this book just by reading its first few pages. Keep going and you'll find how interesting it is.
Elephant run is an awesome historical fiction book you will never ever want to put it down.

Today's lesson

Dear all,

I just want to let you know what a credit you were to me, the school and yourselves in today's lesson. The CIS observer said how wonderful you all were and how well he felt that all engaged with the text. He wasn't actually meant to come back to see your tableaux, but he was so interested in the lesson that he made a point to do so.

Once again, thank you and well done.

Eragon- Christopher Paolini

Eragon lives with his uncle Garrow and cousin Roran on a farm on the outskirts of a small village called Carvahall. While hunting in the forest, at a large mountain range, Eragon is surprised to see a polished blue stone appear in front of him. A few days later, Eragon discovered that a baby dragon hatch from the "stone", and realizes that it is actually a dragon egg. Eragon names the dragon Saphira. He raises the dragon in secret until two of King Galbatorix's servants, the Ra'zac, come to Carvahall looking for the egg. Eragon and Saphira manage to escape, but Garrow is fatally wounded and the house and farm are burned down by the Ra'zac. Sorry read more if you want to find out.
This book is a really good book to read as it is filled with entertaining storyline and the suspense is very high.
This book is a fantasy book so I think that i will recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy alot.

How to build a house - Dana Reinhardt

In this book, the main character, Harper, is having some serious problems at home (a divorce, loss of best friend, boy confusion). And Harper has to get away. She volunteers for the program that is helping to rebuild houses that were destroyed by a tornado though she has never built a house or done anything involving construction. After the summer of volunteer work far from home, she learns what it's like to really love someone and how to trust and also, what a home really means...
How to build a house is a good book with life lessons and a happy ending. I really like the characters in the book, they are very realistic in their dialogues and interactions. And i think everyone should try this book!

Shattered Mirror

Sarah Vida and her family are witches. Sarah is the most powerful vampire-hunter in history. Christopher and Nissa Ravena are vampires that would never drink human blood. That's why they couldn't sense Sarah's aura since they are weak, and they would only drink animal blood. They have same classes and they would sit next to each other at lunch. Christohper begins to fall in love with Sarah. Then Christoper's twin, Nikolas came, the one of the most tear into vampires ever. She told her family that she would stake Nikolas, but somehow she couldn't do it. This book is romance [again] horror? not so sure, some of parts made me have goosebumps. I recommend this to readers who loves Witches and Vampires.

Demon In My View

Jessica Allodola is a senior in high school, that wishes to join the mythical world of vampiers and witches, that she wrote in her books. Tiger Tiger and Dark Flame. Everyone at school ignores her since they think she is a witch or something weird out of the ordinary. Caryn Rashida is a good witch from a clan called Smoke Clan, one of the most powerful line of witches, she is a healer and a protector. Her job is to make sure that Jessica is protected. Caryn tries to be her friend but Jessica would always ignore her. Alex Remington or Aubrey in Jessica's book of Tiger Tiger and Dark Flame is one of the strongest vampires, he tries to kill the author who published a book about the fight that he lost to his rival, Riskia, and the author is about to publish another book about his history. When he finally meets Jessica. Everything turns upside down between the three of them. This book is kinda horror, fantasy? and romance. I think i recommend this to readers who loves Vampires and Witches.

Same kind of different as me - Denver Moore & Ron Hall

Told in two voices, the book alternates between telling the story from the perspective of Ron and Denver. It tells an amazing story of people from completely different worlds who find each other in an unusual way and live through extraordinary circumstances. A different look at slavery, homelessness and generosity. And trust. And unconditional love. And friendship. Those didn't last for just a season, but for a lifetime...
A beautiful story that warms and wrenches your heart, you'll want tissue on your hand for this one.

Living Dead Girl - Elizabeth Scott

The story begins with Alice, but her name wasn't Alice. She was a little girl with friends, family and a life who was later abducted by a man named Ray just before her tenth birthday. Alice called herself the "living dead girl". She's numb inside, she's hungry and she's been tortured so much that she wishes for death. However, she didn't leave her abductor despite multiples opportunities for her to tell somebody, to run away, to ask for help...Why?
Alice's emotions and feelings are so vivid that make me want to save or help her in any way possible because of her vulnerability. Living Dead Girl is a truly haunting and shockingly good story. I think everyone should read it. It is short (170 pages) but beautifully written and unforgettable.

Hobbit

This book is an adventure book, and this book is tells about the story before the novel called "Lord of the Rings" and other many things in details that are not described with details in the Lord of the Rings. The characters of this book are Bilbo, Gandalf, and other many dwaves. This book talks about the Bilbo's unexpected adventures with Gandalf and other dwaves. I liked this book because this book has lots of unknown adventures, and I like adventures and unknown things. Books like this make me feel interested in that book.

Betrayed

This book is written by P.C. and Kristin Cast and is also the sequel to Marked. Zoey who is a fully marked fledging and also leader of the Dark Daughters is possibly the most famous young fledging in vampyre history due to her filled in mark and tattoos that only an adult vampyre should have. Her four friends, Damien, Shaunee, Erin and Stevie Rae have found out that they have affinities for air, fire, water and earth. While Zoey and her friends are planning for the Dark Daughter's ritual, Zoey is having other problems of her own. Firstly, Zoey has imprinted on her ex-boyfriend, Heath whom she cannot get rid of. Secondly, she has a boyfriend named Erik who she is in love with but has a problem with Heath and the imprint thing. Thirdly, Loren Blake the poet seems to be interested in Zoey even though he is a teacher. Other than the boyfriend issues, human teenagers are starting to disappear. According to the FBI, they were found drained of their blood and of course, the police blame the vampyres. To make matters worse, Zoey's best friend Stevie Rae rejected the change and died in her arms. Without her best friend and with Heath missing, Zoey has no idea what to do. Due to the imprint with Heath, Zoey shares a connection with him and decides to try to find him. When it leads her to the tunnels under the Tulsa Depot, she finds many red fledgings who have died in the past but seem alive. Of course they would not let Heath and Zoey go that easily but you have to read the book to find out what happens. I highly recommend this book as it is one of the best books I have ever read. It might start off a little confusing if you do not read the first book but it is definitely worth it.

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

This is the 4th book in the Twilight series and it is the best. In this book Bella turns into a vampire, well you all probably knew that. There are 3 parts in the book, 2 from Bellas's point of view and 1 part in the middle from Jacob's point of view. The plot is that Bella gets pregnant with a half vampire and half human baby. Jacob is first loathe Edward but as time goes, he begins to understand his feelings. But according to vampire legends Vampire babies were dangerous and unstable so the Voultri comes to Forks to destroy Bella and her family. Obviously they don't die because then the book wont sell. SO READ THE BOOK!!!

Oranges In No Man's Land

by Elizabeth Laird.

This is a very simple book about an adventure of a girl called Ayesha during the war time in Beirut, Lebanon. It is rather short (115 pages) and when you finished, it'd leave you thinking... so that's it?

However it is a good book that talks about bravery and people's feeling during the war and how the war itself does not alter the people's lives in anyway. Eventhough this book is short, I would still recommend you to read it because it is easy and quick to read. ( and it counts for the reading challenge thing as well...)

The Magician: The Secret of the Immortal NIcholas Flamel

This book is written by Michael Scott and it is a sequel to the first book, "The Alchemyst: The Secret of....". It is also very adventurous and fast pacing.

This is an interesting book about the adventure about the twins called Josh and Sophie. They go on an adventure to help Nicholas Flamel to save the human beings, fighting with creatures to defend themselves.

Josh and Sophie are twins brothers and sisters who have the gold and silver power light which is extremely powerful and they ARE the legendary twins that so many people have heard of. Nicholas Flamel can sense this power and therefore, he's helping the twins to escape, to save the human race.

Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz

Stormbreaker is a fast and exciting novel- you will never regret reading!
Alex Rider is a ordinary high school boy, just like any other boy. He is taken care by his uncle since both his parents had died. However, when his uncle dies from an 'accident', Alex finds his life turning upside down. Being forcefully recruited into M16, Alex finds himslef going through a crashed SAF training and is sent off to his first mission. Armed only with a unique sets of gadgets and a false identity, alexRider manages to find outwhat exactly what the billionare (the owner or the producer of the stormbreaker). However, he was found out!
This book has a lot of thrill towards the end. This book is really sort of mysterious that this stormbreaker is actually a machine that the owner of the strombreaker wants to ruel the world and become a billionaire.
This book was totally fun to me and it made me feel that Alex Rider was actually me because he was similar age to me, and obviously, 'cause it was fun and dramatic. There were some parts that are a bit violent like when the owner shooting the worker when he dropped something. But still, it was really fun!!! I would totally recommend this book to everyone!!!

Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

"There is a way to be good again"...

In 70's in Afghanistan two boys, one is Amir and the other is Hassan, who is Amir's loyal friend and son of his father's servant Ali, are raised together in Amir's father house, playing and flying kites under a peaceful sky of Kabul. Amir feels that his wise and good father (who is addressed as Baba throughout the story) prefers Hassan to him. But Amir feels a great respect for his father's friend named Rahim Khan, who supports his intention to become a writer. After Amir's winning a competition of flying kite, Hassan runs to bring a kite to Amir, but he is beaten and raped by the brutal Assef in order to protect Amir's kite. The coward Amir witness the assault but doesn't help Hassan. Then comes the day after his birthday party, Amir hides his new watch in Hassan's bed to frame him as a thief and force his father to fire Ali. After that, Russia invades Afghanistan. Baba and Amir escape to Pakistan. Later, they have a simple life in California. Amir graduates from a local college, he has a successful career as a novelist and a happy marriage with his fellow refugee Soraya. Years later, Amir receives a phone call from Rahim Khan, Rahim tells Amir to return to Pakistan to rescue Hassan's son, Sohrab, from an orphanage. Amir has finally managed to take Sohrab to the US and introduces him to his wife. However, Sohrab refuses to speak or even glance at Soraya. Sohrab begins to interact with Amir when Amir talks about Hassan and shows off some off Hassan's trick. In the end, Sohrab only shows a smile, "One corner of his mouth had curled up just so. A smile. Lopsided. Hardly there. But there.", and Amir takes to it with all his heart as he runs the kite for Sohrab, saying "For you, a thousand times over."
The Kite Runner is a very good book. It gives you a new viewpoint about Afghanistan. The style and approach is something unlike anything else I've ever read. I rate this book 9 out 10.

H/W today

Please prepare your presentations- consider these points in addition to the techniques and their effects:

1) What kind of poem is it? sonnet etc?
2) What is the effect of the structure?
3) What does the title suggest?
4) What images are there in the poemand what do they suggest about the speaker's attitude towards war?

The World is Flat - Thomas L. Friedman

This book is an extremely interesting read, and is the prequel to Freidman's book "Hot, Flat and Crowded", which I have also read. The book is about the world's globalization and interconnectivity. Unity through technology, thus rendering the world 'Flat'. Freidman explains that the world has changed so radically, that now we are able to communicate with another person halfway across the world sending a message in the blink of an eye to how we outsource our technical support to countries such as India. India is the main focus of this book, which was a pleasant surprise to me, as this is more relevant to me. Friendman interviews the CEOs of companies such as Infosys and Reliance (Naryan Murty who is the CEO of Infosys is also the second richest man in the world, following Warren Buffet). Freidman also travels to China ad the Middle-east, where he explores their brilliant endeavors to 'flatten' today's world!

A brilliant read, slightly outdated, but still brilliant!

How to write about the effects of poetic techniques

"The writer has used a simile, ‘small as a butterfly,’ to present the notion of Hope. This suggests that Hope, like a butterfly, is something that can inspire people, change their attitude and enable them to transform their circumstances into something more desirable. However, as a “butterfly” is delicate and fragile, it also suggests that Hope can be fleeting, is too easily broken and sometimes difficult to find.’
